Western Michigan golf to play in Golfweek/Stifel Spring Challenge

PAWLEYS ISLAND, S.C. -- The Western Michigan women's golf team plays in its penultimate regular season tournament of the year this week.

The Broncos will be one of 19 teams participating in the annual Golfweek/Stfel Spring Challenge starting Monday through Wednesday. Hosted at the Caledonia Golf & Fish Club, players will tee off on the 6,054-yard, 71-par course during the three-day event which runs Monday to Wednesday. The tournament will feature double tee starts each day, starting at 7:45 a.m.

Coastal Carolina is the top-ranked team in the field at 109, followed by UNC Ashville (112), Middle Tennessee (118), and Jacksonville State (146). In addition, three other MAC teams will be competing, Ball State (135), Akron (179), and Ohio (206). Also participating in the field on the women's side is Charleston Southern, Evansville, Fairleigh Dickinson, Marshall, Missouri State, Morehead State, Radford, Samford, Stonehill, and Winthrop. 

WMU will have six players participating in this weeks tournament. Seniors Megha Vallabhaneni and Jenna Hayes, juniors Macy Beeson and Bella Brooks, sophomore Lauren Lupinek, and freshman Danielle Daniy will compete for the Brown and Gold in the three day tournament. Brooks will be the first of Western Michigan's players to tee off at 8:50 a.m. on hole 10 as an individual. The rest of the Broncos will tee off from hole 1 beginning at 9:25 a.m. starting with Beeson. 

In the team's last tournament at the end of March, WMU placed 13th after three rounds on the Wigwam Resort Blue course at the Bell Bank "Pay it Forward" Collegiate, hosted by Minnesota. Vallabhaneni had the Brown and Gold's only round under par in the final day of the Bell Bank "Pay it Forward" Collegiate on Tuesday, March 24. Vallabhaneni ended her third round of the tournament carding a 70 and overall placed 30th out of 82 golfers with scores of 73-74-70 to end the tournament at 217 (+4). As a team, Western Michigan finished 13th of 14th with scores of 310-302-296 at 56 over par.

Over the first eight tournament of the 2025-26 season, the Broncos owns a 308.2 stroke average. The team's lowest round of the year came only two tournaments ago with a +4 (288) set in the final round of the MSU SoCal Spring Invitational (March 10). WMU will look to get back to its performance from the Spring Invitational by the MAC Tournament at the end of April.
