ROCK HILL, S.C. -- The Western Michigan track and field team continued its strong start to the outdoor season as the Broncos wrapped up the opening day of the ADIDAS Winthrop Invitational on Friday.
Senior Juliane Sormain topped her performance at last week's Blizzard Buster hosted by Miami (Ohio), this time taking first place in the 800-meter run. Sormain ran a season-best time of 2:13.10, finishing nearly two seconds ahead of second place Victoria Dotson from Marshall.
Senior Brittney Hall had a personal best in the 5,000-meter run, winning the race with a time of 17:21.09. The time shaved four seconds off of her previous personal-best and gave her her first collegiate win.
Freshman Sarinity Bracey continued her strong start to the outdoor season, taking third place in the 100-meter hurdles with a new personal-best time of 14.29 seconds. WMU had three finishers in the top eight, with fellow freshmen Grace Johnson taking sixth place with a time of 14.76 and Ahvon Mitchell taking eighth with a time of 15 seconds flat.
Senior Taylor Eaton took third overall in the hammer throw with a new personal-best distance of 165' 4" (50.39m) to highlight the field events for WMU on the day.
"We had great execution from Sarinity and Brittney in their races," said head coach Makiba Batten. "They took charge from start to finish. Brittney showed her veteran savvy by being patient and setting the tone for the rest of her 5,000 teammates. We're looking to build off that momentum for tomorrow."
Western Michigan has a full day of action on Saturday, beginning at 10 a.m.
