KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan track and field heads down Rock Hill, S.C., and Winthrop University for the 2021 ADIDAS Winthrop Invitational at the Irwin Belk Track & Field Complex on Friday and Saturday.
It is the second outdoor meet for the Broncos. Last weekend WMU went to do Miami (Ohio) for the Blizzard Buster and kicked off the season in impressive fashion. Western Michigan had top-five finishes in seven events on the day, led by senior thrower
Aniya Davis. Davis won the discus throw with a personal-best distance of 164' 2" (50.03m) and went on to take second in the hammer throw with another personal-best of 179' 3" (54.63m). Senior middle-distance specialist
Juliane Sormain had a second-place finish in the 800-meter run, turning in a time of 2:13.84.
WMU is set to compete in the hammer throw, 200-meter dash, 800-meter run, 5,000-meter run and the 4x100-meter relay on Friday. Davis has the top-seeded distance in the hammer and Sormain the top-seeded time in the field for the 800.
On Saturday the Broncos will compete in the discus, shot put, 100-meter dash, 400-meter dash, 1,500-meter run and 4x400-meter relay. Davis is the top-ranked discus thrower, with Ochs having the third-best seed distance in the field. Ochs is also the top-ranked athlete in the shot put.
