OXFORD, Ohio – Senior
Aniya Davis had a first place finish and a second place finish to highlight the Western Michigan track and field team's outdoor season-opener at the Blizzard Buster hosted by Miami (Ohio) on Saturday.
Davis won the discus with a new personal-best distance of 164' 2" (50.03m). Junior
Madison Ochs also had a strong showing in the event, taking fifth place with a distance of 146' 5" (44.64m). Earlier in the day Davis took second overall in the hammer throw with another personal-best, this time reaching a 179' 3" (54.63m). WMU got all three of its throwers in the top 10 with senior
Taylor Eaton taking fifth place with a distance of 164' 1" (50.01m) and Ochs taking 10
th at 153' 10" (46.88m), a new personal best.
"We have been graciously awaiting the start of the outdoor season since last year," said head coach
Makiba Batten. "This was a great opportunity to open up and compete at the championship venue early. I was very pleased to see the efforts from everyone. Aniya set the tone with a phenomenal day in the hammer and discus. We can continue to build on these performances for the rest of the season."
Senior
Juliane Sormain, competing in her first meet since the 2020 indoor season, finished in second place in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:13.84.
Courtney Allen also had a top-10 finish in the event, taking eighth with a time of 2:21.88.
Freshmen
Sarinity Bracey and
Ahvon Mitchell both finished in the top five of the 100-meter hurdles. Bracey took third with a personal-best time of 14.46 seconds and Mitchell finished in fifth at 14.81. The duo also took fourth and sixth in the 400 hurdles. This time it was Mitchell finishing on top with a time of 1:06.74 and Bracey at 1:07.53. Fellow freshman Claira Gilchrest took eighth with a time of 1:09.59.
Trinity Bracey had a personal-best in the 100-meter dash, taking ninth with a time of 12.42 seconds. She also went on to take fourth in the 200-meter dash, running a time of 25.46.
Senior
Brittney Hall had the top performance in the 3,000-meter run for Western Michigan, running a time of 10:13.21.
Western Michigan heads down to South Carolina for the Winthrop Adidas Invitational next Friday and Saturday.
