KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan men's tennis team improved to 5-0 this season after defeating DePaul, 6-1, at West Hills Athletic Club on Sunday afternoon.
WMU opened up the match winning the doubles point after going 2-1. Seniors
Jannik Opitz and
Zac Faveri downed Vito and Fran Tonejc 7-5 at No. 1, while the duo of Peter Kuzynski and
Joaquin Caballer defeated Tripp Tuff and Luuk Wassenaar 6-2. The Blue Demon's duo of Christopher Casati and Boris Spanjaard bested WMU's
Fynn Lohse and
Arjun Honnappa, 6-4.
In singles play the Broncos went 5-1. Opitz continued his undefeated run on the season after beating Vito Tonejc 6-3, 6-1. Kuszynski was slotted at No. 3 and defeated Christopher Casati 6-1, 6-0, while Lohse earned a similar win at No. 4, beating Fran Tonejc 6-0, 6-1. Like his doubles teammate, Honnappa also avenged his earlier loss by winning at No. 5 over Tuff 6-2, 6-4.
Brogan Pierce rounded out WMU's singles wins, beating Wassenaar at No. 6 5-7, 7-5, 1-0 (10-8).
The Broncos have a busy week next week. WMU opens on Thursday hosting Chicago State at 2 p.m. and then welcomes Illinois-Chicago on Friday at 5 p.m. Western Michigan then heads on the road for the first time this season, heading to Notre Dame on Saturday for a 3 p.m. match.
