KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Western Michigan senior
Jannik Opitz became the all-time career wins leader in the history of the storied Western Michigan Men's Tennis program after the Broncos defeated Wayne State University, 7-0, on Wednesday afternoon at West Hills Athletic Club.
The Hildesheim, Germany, native tied Michael Calderone's record of 216 wins after pairing up with
Zac Faveri for a doubles win over WSU's Dom Spicer and Luke Laws, 6-4. The record-breaking win came in singles with Opitz defeating Spicer at No. 1, 6-4, 6-2.
"Congratulations to Jannik on his record-breaking 217th win," said head coach
Dave Morin. "He's a great young man and very deserving of this record. His winning percentage is almost 75 percent and that is incredible. More impressive, he's a great young man with a bright future ahead of him and a natural leader of our team."
Calderone's record was set back in 2011 when he broke RJ Dunkle's mark of 213 that was set back in 1985.
WMU (8-1) claimed the doubles point after victories by
Fynn Lohse and
Jack Randall over Daniel Grey and Donovan Nguyen at No. 2, 6-4, and
Peter Kuszynski and
Arjun Honnappa over David Solar and Joe Steele, 6-2, at No. 3.
In singles action
