COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Western Michigan hockey's
Alex Aslanidis and
Ronnie Attard have earned National Collegiate Hockey Conference weekly honors after their performances in WMU's sweep of No. 4 Minnesota-Duluth.
Attard earned Bauer NCHC Defenseman of the Week for the second this season, while Aslanidis earned Bauer NCHC Goalie of the Week.
Aslanidis was in net for both of WMU's wins against the Bulldogs. On Friday, he made 24 saves to earn his first collegiate shutout. The freshman had eight of his 24 saves come on five UMD power plays and three saves came during at two-minute 5-on-3 advantage for the Bulldogs. On Saturday he made 22 saves and allowed just one goal. Aslanidis posted a .979 save percentage, a 0.50 goals against average and helped Western Michigan's penalty kill go a perfect 7-for-7 on the weekend.
Attard had three points on the weekend, all coming in Saturday's win. On Friday he finished +2 and helped the penalty kill go 5-for-5 as the Broncos blanked UMD. On Saturday he netted the first goal of the game early in the second period on the power play to give WMU a 1-0 lead. Just 60 seconds later he scored again on the power play to make it 2-0. Attard then assist on WMU's third goal of the game, helping put UMD in a 3-0 hole.
The Broncos are off this weekend and are back at it next Friday and Sunday against Miami. WMU hosts MU on Friday at 7:05 p.m. before traveling to Oxford to battle the RedHawks on Sunday at 2 p.m. Sunday's game will be broadcast live on CBS Sports Network.
