SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Western Michigan men's tennis team suffered its first defeat of the season, falling on the road at Notre Dame 5-2 on Saturday afternoon.
The Broncos (7-1) kept up their streak of winning every doubles point so far this season. Seniors
Jannik Opitz and
Zac Faveri defeated Matt Gamble and William Howells at No. 2, 6-3.
Peter Kuszynski and
Joaquin Caballer won at No. 3 over Matthew Che and Jean-Marc Malkowski, 6-4, to clinch the point.
Arjun Honnappa and
Fynn Lohse fell to Richard Ciamarra and Axel Nefve, 6-2, at No. 1.
Freshman
Brogan Pierce was the lone Bronco to win in singles, defeating Andrew Mariados at No. 6 singles, 6-7, 6-2, 1-0. Oppitz fell at No. 1 to Nefve, 6-3, 6-3, while Ciamarra defeated Kuszynski at No. 2 3-6, 6-4, 6-3. Freshman
Jackson Boone fell at No. 3 to Che 6-4, 5-7, 1-0, with Lohse falling at No. 4 to Connor Fu 6-4, 6-3. Honnappa lost to Malkowski at No. 5, 6-3, 7-5.
The Broncos are back in action with a double-header on Wednesday at home against Wayne State, beginning at 1 p.m.
