KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan men's tennis team improved to 7-0 after defeating Illinois-Chicago, 7-0, at West Hills Athletic Club on Friday evening.
WMU kept up its streak of getting the doubles point in every match this season. Freshmen
Brogan Pierce and
Jackson Boone were the first to finish, defeating Casey Schrader and Artem Iermolov at No. 3, 6-1. The duo of
Peter Kuszynski and
Joaquin Caballer secured the point after beating Anthony Nguyen and Gustavo Schwebel, 6-2, at No. 2. Seniors
Jannik Opitz and
Zac Faveri improved to 7-0 after winning at No. 1, 7-5, over Pelle Strandberg and Luiz Dos Santos.
Freshman
Benjamin George made his collegiate debut and was the first to finish in singles, defeating Schrader 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6. Next to finish was Opitz at No. 1, winning 6-1, 6-2 over Strandberg to now move two wins shy of tying the program's record for all-time wins.
Fynn Lohse moved up to No. 2 for the day and defeated Nguyen 6-1, 6-0, while
Arjun Honnappa won at No. 3 over Dos Santos 6-2, 6-3. Faveri was victorious at No. 4 over Schwebel 6-2, 7-5 and Caballer beat Lermolov at No. 5 6-1, 6-3.
The Broncos have a quick turnaround and are back in action again on Saturday at 3 p.m. against Notre Dame.
