KALAMAZOO – The Western Michigan women's tennis team wraps up its 2021 season hosting Northern Illinois on Thursday at 4 p.m.
The Broncos (5-12-0, 3-7-0 MAC) are coming off a split last weekend with a 2-0 win at home over Ball State and a 2-1 loss at Miami. The loss to the RedHawks has eliminated WMU from the Mid-American Conference Tournament. Western Michigan needed to finish in the top six of the MAC standings and can only finish as high as eighth with a win over the Huskies.
SCOUTING THE HUSKIES (5-11-2, 2-6-2 MAC)
Northern Illinois has also been eliminated from postseason play after splitting last week with Miami and Ball State. The Huskies defeated the RedHawks 2-1 at home but fell to the Cardinals 5-0 on the road.
Fifth-year senior Haley Hoppe leads the team in points with 16, goals scored with seven and is tied for the team lead in assists with two. Three of her goals have gone for game-winners this season. Sophomore midfielder Claudia Muessing is second on the team with three goals.
Sadie McGill and Julia Lentz have split time at goalkeeper for NIU. McGill has a 4-7-1 record with two shutouts and 75 total saves, while Lentz is 1-4-1 with 32 total saves.
PRIDE DAY
Thursday is also the program's first ever Pride Game. The Broncos are continuing the NCAA's Diversity & Inclusion campaign and will be showing their pride and support for the LGBTQA+ community. The focus of his game is inclusion, empowerment, education and mental health awareness for the community. There will be pins, stickers and flags to support the LGBTQA+ community.
