EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Western Michigan men's tennis team completed the first full day of competition at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Midwest Regional Championship at Michigan State University on Friday.
For a couple of Broncos the action started on Thursday. Freshman Anton Arzhankin earned a bye in the first round of qualifying tournament. He then defeated Clement Mainguy Youngstown State 6-4, 6-1 to advance to the third round. In Friday's third round he defeated Marquette's Stefan Drogovic 3-6, 6-0, 6-3.
Also in action on Thursday was sophomore Joaquin Caballer. He opened the first round with a win over Sven Moser 6-3, 6-2 and then defeated Michigan State's Josh Mukherjee 6-0, 6-1 to advance to the third round. On Friday he took down Illinois State's Melker Isaksson 4-6, 7-5, 6-3.
In doubles action it was Fynn Lohse and Ferdinand Schlueter that advanced on Friday, defeating Michigan's team of Yaffe and Zederbrauer, 8-6. They are set to play Northwestern's Pickens and Forman on Saturday.
Over in the main draw in singles action on Saturday, Lohse is set to take on Alex Brown from Illinois, Peter Kusynzski will take on Wisconsin's Tim Dzhurinsky, Arzhankin will take on UW's Robin Parts, Benjamin George was paired with Braden Ho from Notre Dame, Jackson Boone will battle Tripp Tuff, Caballer has been paired with UNDs Matthew Che and Arjun Honnappa will compete against CSU's Jakov Suler.
