Broncos Host Kent State in Homecoming Game Saturday

KALAMAZOO – Mich. – Homecoming is upon us at Western Michigan University, as football welcomes Kent State to campus for a 3:30 p.m. Mid-American Conference game at Waldo Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 16.

BRONCOS VS. GOLDEN FLASHES
  • This is the 57th meeting between Western Michigan and Kent State University. The series dates back to 1951.
  • WMU is 35-20-1 all-time against the Golden Flashes.
  • Since 1980, the Broncos are 22-5 in the series, including a stretch of 12 wins in a row from 1989-2005. Out of the previous 27 matchups, there have only been seven one-score games.
  • The Broncos are 18-10-1 at home against Kent State, and have won eight of the last nine matchups in Kalamazoo.
 
SCOUTING KENT STATE (3-3, 2-0 MAC West)
  • The Golden Flashes went 1-3 in non-conference play with losses at Texas A&M, Iowa and Maryland. They defeated Virginia Military Institute, 60-10, at home on Sept. 11.
  • On Oct. 2, Kent State came away with a 27-20 home win over Bowling Green, before emerging victorious against visiting Buffalo on Oct. 9 in a 48-38 thriller.
  • Against Buffalo, quarterback Dustin Crum was 22- of-36 with 407 passing yards, three touchdowns, no interceptions, and ran for 72 yards and two rushing scores. Receiver Dante Cephas had 13 catches for 186 yards and three touchdowns.
  • The Golden Flashes lead the MAC in total offensive yards per game (464.2)
 
THE LAST MEETING
  • Western Michigan forced four turnovers and returned three of them for touchdowns, as the Broncos defeated Kent State 48-20 at Waldo Stadium on Nov. 8, 2017.
  • Senior running back Jarvion Franklin finished with 191 yards on 22 carries and a touchdown to pace the Bronco offense.
  • The game was tied at 14 in the first quarter before Franklin ripped off a 72-yard touchdown run to make it 21-14. The Broncos tacked on a field goal to make it 24-14 with 2:33 left before intermission, and Darius Phillips came through with a massive pick-six on the ensuing Kent State possession to put WMU up 31-14 at the break. The Broncos were able to keep the Golden Flashes at arm's length over the final 30 minutes of play.
 
ALWAYS WANTING MOORE
  • Sophomore wide receiver Skyy Moore has had an incredible start to the season.
  • He is fifth in the nation with 8.2 receptions per game, and has put up some video game numbers this season. He posted a career-high 163 yards and two touchdowns against Buffalo on Oct. 2.
  • Moore leads the MAC in receptions (41) and yards per game (98.8), despite playing five games, and is third with 494 receiving yards.
