KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan men's tennis team opened up the 2020-21 season with a convincing double-header sweep of Grand Valley State at West Hills Athletic Club on Friday.
WMU won both matches 7-0 to open up the season 2-0.
"It was great to see our guys back on the court competing after almost 11 months," said head coach
Dave Morin. "Our freshman got their first taste of competition and we saw a lot of bright spots but we also have plenty to work on, especially in doubles. We look to improve in those areas in Sunday's matches against Ferris State."
MATCH 1 – W – 7-0
To open doubles play seniors
Jannik Opitz and
Zac Faveri defeated Jack Daushman and Marton Matov 6-2 at No. 1 doubles. Sophomore
Arjun Honnappa and junior
Fynn Lohse defeated DJ Colatone and Sebastian Acre 6-2 to secure the doubles point at No. 2. Freshmen Jackson Boon and
Ferdinand Schlueter fell to Sean Miller and Kushan Shah 6-4 at No. 3. (Order of finish 2,1,3).
Opitz got one win closer to WMU's all-time mark after defeating Dausman 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 singles. For No. 2 singles Kuszynski defeated Matov 6-2, 6-2, while Boone defeated Ignacio Morera-Lucas 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3 to earn his first collegiate win. Lohse also picked up his first collegiate victory by defeating Acre at No. 4 singles 6-2, 7-5. Honnappa beat Miller 6-3, 6-2 at No. 5, while freshman
Brogan Pierce earned his first win after beating Colatone 6-4, 6-4. (Order of finish 1,2,4,6,3,5)
MATCH 2 – W – 7-0
In doubles, Honnappa and Lohse played at No. 1 later in the afternoon, defeating GVSU's Dausman and Matov 6-1. Opitz and Faveri once again secured the doubles point after beating Miller and Freddy Cossio 6-2 at No. 2. The duo of Pierce and Kuszynski rebounded from their loss earlier in the afternoon and defeated Colatone and Rhoades 7-2. (Order of finish 1,2,3)
Opitz continued his winning ways at No. 1, this time defeating Matov 6-1, 6-2. At No. 2, Kuszynski defeated Dausman 6-2, 6-3, while Boon picked up his second career singles win at No. 3 after defeating Cossio 6-1, 6-2. Loshe defeated Miller 6-1, 6-4 at No. 4, while Honnappa was at No. 5 again and defeated Morera-Lucas 6-1, 6-3. Pierce closed out the day by defeating Shah 6-3, 6-2 at No. 6.
