TEMPE, Ariz. – On Monday the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) named Western Michigan men's tennis an All-Academic team while
Jannik Opitz,
Peter Kuszynski and
Arjun Honnappa were named ITA Scholar-Athletes.
The Broncos earned the ITA All-Academic team honor for the sixth year in a row after posting a cumulative team grade point average above 3.2. WMU along with Ball State, Buffalo and Binghamton were the only schools from the Mid-American Conference to earn the All-Academic team award.
"Our young men have once again demonstrated their commitment to excelling academically by putting in the required time and work with their classes," said WMU men's tennis head coach
Dave Morin. "It's not easy to balance the demands of being a Division I student-athlete and I'm very proud of this deserving honor for our team and for Jannik, Peter and Arjun."
Three men's tennis student-athletes were named ITA scholar-athletes in
Jannik Opitz,
Peter Kuszynski and
Arjun Honnappa. It's the fourth year in a row Opitz has received ITA scholar-athlete recognition while it's the second year in a row for Kuszynski. Honnappa earned the academic honor for the first time in his career.
Prior to the cancellation of the 2019-20 season due to the coronavirus pandemic the two-time defending MAC champs had an 11-5 overall record and were 1-0 in MAC play. The Broncos had won six straight matches prior to the cancellation and since 2017 have won 18 straight MAC regular season matches.
The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA program that has a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale). In order to earn ITA Scholar Athlete status, a player must meet the following criteria: 1.) be a varsity letter winner, 2.) have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and 3.) have been enrolled at their present school for at least 2 semesters (including freshman through senior year).
