Bowie, Mohler Tabbed WMU’s Medal of Excellence Award Winners

CLEVELAND – Former Western Michigan student-athletes Anthony Bowie and Amelia Mohler were named the school's Mid-American Conference 2019-20 Medal of Excellence Award recipients on Tuesday.

The Medal of Excellence, presented annually since 2014, is given to one male and one female student-athlete from the graduating class of each of the league's 12 member institutions.

"The Medal of Excellence Award is a reinforcement of core values that we as a conference and each of our member institutions all possess with excellence in academics, leadership and service," MAC Commissioner Jon A. Steinbrecher said. "We congratulate all of our Medal of Excellence Award Winners."

To be honored with the Medal of Excellence Award, student-athletes had to participate on the varsity level in a conference-sponsored sport and have a minimum 3.50 cumulative grade-point average (GPA), exhibit athletics excellence, demonstrate leadership and possess a commitment to service. Each institution selected its recipients.

Bowie was a four-year letterman for the men's soccer program who capped his career in 2019 by being named the CoSIDA Academic All-America of the Year. He was a second team All-MAC honoree as a senior and received a pair of MAC Player of the Week accolades during the campaign. Bowie was a three-time Academic All-MAC and MAC Distinguished Scholar Athlete selection. The Grand Rapids, Mich., native closed his career playing in 74 games with 56 starts, 12 goals scored, nine assists and 33 points. Bowie graduated from Western Michigan in December with a degree in sales & business marketing and a 4.00 GPA.

Mohler participated in 33 meets for the Bronco gymnastics squad. She was named the 2020 MAC Co-Specialist of the Year, becoming the first WMU gymnast to earn the league's specialist of the year award. Mohler was a three-time Academic All-MAC selection. She turned in a career-best 9.925 score on the bars against Ball State (3/10/18) and a personal-high 9.900 on the beam versus Ball State (2/9/20). During her senior season, the Broncos captured the regular season championship with a 5-1 league record. Mohler, of Tinley Park, Ill., graduated from Western Michigan in April with a double major in psychology and sociology.
