KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan men's tennis program and head coach Dave Morin have announced the signing of Fynn Lohse and Ferdinand Schluter to National Letters of Intent, while also announcing the return senior Jannik Opitz for a fifth year.
Loshe hails from Kaltenkirchen, Germany, and transfers from Idaho State after two years. The 6-foot-6 athlete has a singles universal tennis rating of 11.83 and his double UTR is 12.28. As a freshman with the Bengals he had a total record 8-11 and a doubles record of 8-6.
"Fynn is a 4.0 student who brings a big game and much-needed experience to our young squad," said Morin. "He played No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles for ISU this year where he went 4-4 and 7-4 respectively, before the cancelled season. I love his approach and tennis IQ and believe he will really elevate his game in the next couple of years because of his hunger to get better."
Schluter, also a German native, comes to WMU from Prisdorf, Schleswig-Holstein near Hamburg. The 6-foot-4 athlete's current German ranking is 260 and intends to study information technology or computer science.
"Ferdi was a last-minute signee and we're extremely excited to have him join the Broncos," said Morin. "He's already an accomplished player and being big and athletic, his ceiling is very high."
Opitz returns for a fifth year after having eligibility extended due to the COVID-19 cancellation of the spring tennis season. The 2019 Mid-American Conference Player of the Year looks to cement his position near the top of WMU men's tennis history, just 15 victories shy of tying the program record.
"I know Jannik was extremely disappointed when the season was canceled due to corona virus and he was having a very good year for us," said Morin. "We're elated to have the reigning PTOY returning for another year to play for the Brown & Gold."
