KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Western Michigan hockey senior forward
Hugh McGing has been named a CCM Hockey/American Hockey Coaches Association West First Team All-American, announced live on ESPN's SportsCenter late Saturday night.
Â
McGing becomes the first Bronco since defenseman Wayne Gagne (1986-87) to earn First Team honors and the 11th WMU hockey player in program history to earn All-American status. He is also just the fourth forward in program history to earn the honors, joining Mike Bishai (2000-01), Dan Dorion (1983-83, 85-86, and Rob Hodge (1974-75).
Â
The St. Louis Blues signee led the team with 35 points on 13 goals and 22 assists, helping Western Michigan finish in fourth place in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference standings and earning home ice for the NCHC Playoffs, that were canceled due to the COVID-19 virus. McGing led all WMU forwards in plus/minus at +18 on the season. Twenty two of his points came in NCHC play, earning the Chicago, Ill., native First Team All-NCHC honors. Â
Â
"Hugh being selected a First Team All-American hockey player is only trumped by the fact that he has been an All-American person since he committed to being a Bronco more than six years ago and that is not going to change," said head coach
Andy Murray. "All of Bronco Nation is standing and applauding."
Â
McGing is also the first All-American for the Broncos since Danny DeKeyser went back-to-back in 2011-12 and 2012-13.
