Looking Back: Baseball vs. Central Michigan

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – With its series starting back in 1920 Western Michigan and Central Michigan have met on the diamond 179 times.

March 27 – 29 was set to be the first home series of the 2020 campaign for the Western Michigan baseball team with the Broncos taking on in-state rival Central Michigan inside Robert J. Bobb Stadium at Hyames Field. Since the series won't be played, we wanted to run back some of the best moments in recent memory.

2016
Sophomore pitchers Jacob Piechota and Jake Bartels combined to throw a three-hitter as the Western Michigan baseball team shutout rival Central Michigan 4-0 to send WMU to its first ever Mid-American Conference Championship game.

"It was one of the gutsiest performances I've seen in my career from both Piechota and Bartes," said head coach Billy Gernon. "It was another fabulous team effort with great team defense. Our guys 100 percent have earned and deserved this."

Piechota in his first career start at WMU went a career-high six innings allowing just one hit, no runs and one walk while strikeout out four batters. He went 4.2 innings before allowing his first hit. Bartels entered to pitch the final three innings, allowing two hits and no walks with two strikeouts.

Connor Smith led the Broncos at the plate going 1-for-3 with two RBIs while drawing one walk. Grant Miller registered a 3-for-3 performance while recording one RBI and scoring one run.
