BLUFFTON, S.C. – The Western Michigan golf team sits in fourth place at the Low Country Invitational, with four golfers in the top 11 after the first round at Crescent Pointe Golf Club on Monday.
The Broncos combined for a total score of 299 (+15) and sit just two strokes behind host Wingate and Montevallo. Eastern Michigan is just a stroke ahead of WMU at 298 (+14). Grand Valley State rounds out the top five of the 14-team tournament at 310 (+26).
"We played solid golf today," said head coach Elise Swartout-Mosher. "Each of them looked confident and positive throughout the whole day. We are looking forward to another great opportunity tomorrow."
Fiona Wang was the Broncos' top finisher on the day, shooting a 73 (+2) and sits tied fifth. Wang is just two strokes off of leaders Warissara Puangcharoen of Wingate and Kayla Shelton of Montevallo. Wang led the Broncos with two birdies and also had 12 pars in the round. Senior Jasmine Chee and freshman Alissa Fish are tied for ninth place after opening the tournament with a 75 (+4). Fish also had 12 pars on the day, while Chee had a team-high three birdies.
Brooke Gibbons is in a six-way tie for 11th and sits just one stroke behind Chee and Fish with a 76 (+5). Junior Cameryn Lucia is just one stroke behind Gibbons and is tied for 17th.
The final round begins Tuesday morning.
