LAKEWOOD, Fla. – The Western Michigan golf team went 2-0 on the first day of the Mid-American Conference Match Play Challenge on Monday at the Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club.
The Broncos were the six seed in the tournament and started off the day battling Western Illinois in the opening round. WMU defeated WIU 4-1-0. Cameryn Lucia won her match 2 up, while Brooke Gibbons won 2&1, Fionna Wang won 3&2, while Jasmine Chee won 4&3.
WMU advanced to the quarterfinals and took on Eastern Michigan in the afternoon. The Broncos defeated their conference rivals 3-2-0. Lucia won for the second time on the day, 2&1, while Gibbons and Chee also won their matches to push Western Michigan to Tuesday's semifinals against Morehead State.
MSU is the seven seed in the tournament and defeated Bowling Green, 4-0-1, in the opening round in the morning. The Eagles then defeated second-seeded Northern Illinois 3-2-0 in the quarterfinals.
The semifinals begin on Tuesday morning, with Florida Gulf Coast and Akron battling it out on the other side of the bracket.
