RIO VERDE, Ariz. – Western Michigan senior Jasmine Chee sits tied for third place and just one shot off the lead after the first round of the Rio Verde Invitational, hosted by WMU at the Rio Verde Country Club on Friday.
Chee finished with an even-par round of 72 and sits in a four-way tie for third place. Arkansas State's Grayson Gladden and Seton Hall's Elizabeth Win are tied for the lead at -1.
Xavier leads the tournament overall after shooting a combined 297 (+9). ASU is in second at 299 (+11) followed by Northern Illinois at 302 (+14), Ball State at 305 (+17) and SHU at 306 (+18) to round out the top five. The Broncos sit in 12th place with a combined total of 313 (+25).
"Today wasn't our best," said head coach Elise Swartout-Mosher. "We had a few too many mistakes out there and didn't give ourselves enough birdie opportunities. Jasmine had a really strong day for us. Tomorrow is a new day and we have lots of golf left ahead of us."
Chee finished her first 18 holes with 14 pars, tied for third-most on the day, and two birdies. Sophomore Fiona Wang was the second finisher on the day for the Broncos, shooting a 78 (+6). Freshman Alissa Fish and sophomore Brooke Gibbons finished within a shot of each other. Fish shot an 81 (+9) and Gibbons an 82 (+10). Junior Cameryn Lucia rounded out WMU's five on the day with an 88 (+16).
Round two begins on Saturday at 3 p.m. EST.
