Men's Tennis to Continue Non-Conference Schedule at Michigan

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Western Michigan men's tennis will travel to Ann Arbor for a non-conference contest against #16 Michigan at 6 p.m on Saturday.

SCOUTING MICHIGAN
The nationally ranked Wolverines finished the 2019 season with an overall record of 18-9, finishing fourth in the final Big Ten regular season standings. They have started this season 4-1 and are coming off two wins at the ITA Kickoff in Champaign, Ill., defeating Texas Tech and Ole Miss. 

Reigning Big Ten Freshman of the Year Andrew Fenty and junior Mattias Siimar, who are ranked fifth in the latest ITA doubles rankings, have won their first five matches of the year. Fenty and freshman Ondrej Styler are both featured in the ITA singles top 100 rankings. 

WEEKEND RECAP
The Broncos recorded a pair of road wins, beating Illinois State 5-2 on Saturday and Valparaiso 4-3 on Sunday. Western Michigan, who is 5-2 on the year, has now won three consecutive matches. Junior captain Zac Faveri went 4-0 overall for the Broncos over the weekend. 

SWEEPING MAC HONORS
Senior Jannik Opitz was named the MAC Singles Player of the Week for the fourth time in his career on Wednesday. The Hildesheim, Germany native went 2-0 at #1 singles, defeating Diego Le Gal Perez and the reigning Summit League Player of the Year, in Brandon Ancona.

Opitz also earned MAC Doubles Team of the Week honors with Kennosuke Nouchi, marking the second time this season that the senior duo has received recognition. Jannik and Kennosuke improved to 4-2 in dual action on Sunday against the Crusaders. 

UP NEXT
The Broncos will face another Big Ten road test when they play Michigan State on Friday, February 7 in East Lansing at 6 p.m.
