Broncos Start 2020 Season Strong with Two Victories

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Kalamazoo, Mich. - The Western Michigan men's tennis team opened its 2020 dual season with a pair of non-conference wins, defeating Butler 5-2 and Illinois Chicago 6-1 on Sunday at the West Hills Athletic Club, with all seven Broncos seeing action.

Western Michigan swept all three doubles contests to take the early 1-0 advantage against Butler. The senior duo of Kennosuke Nouchi and Jannik Opitz, who are currently ranked 41st in the nation, defeated Thomas Brennan and Olof Wiklund 6-4 in the #1 doubles slot. Sophomore's Jack Randall and Peter Kuszynski prevailed in their match by a final score of 6-2 at #2 doubles, while the freshmen team of Rodrigo Crespo and Arjun Honnappa took down Michael Karr and Drew Michael.

The Broncos then won four of the six singles matches, helping them secure the overall victory over the Bulldogs. Nouchi and Randall both used a deciding third set to earn wins, with Kennosuke taking the last two sets (5-7, 6-3, 6-2). Kuszynski and Crespo won in straight sets, with Rodrigo recording his first dual match singles win as a Bronco.

In their second game of the day, the Broncos once again swept the doubles portion of the contest, prevailing over three teams from UIC in the process. Western Michigan claimed five of the six singles matches, with junior Zac Faveri defeating Luiz Dos Santos at the #6 singles spot in his first game of 2020.

Kuszynski, Nouchi and Randall each went 4-0 individually on the day. As a team, the Broncos went 6-0 in doubles and 9-3 in singles between the two matches.

WMU will head to Iowa for three more non-conference matches. The Broncos will face Drake on Friday, January 17 in Des Moines before traveling to the University of Iowa on Saturday. Western Michigan will close out its Hawkeye State road trip back in Des Moines on Sunday, where they will take on Gonzaga in a neutral site match-up.
