KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan golf team heads to Eastern Michigan University for the Shirley Spork Invitational on Monday and Tuesday at Eagle Crest Golf Club.

The 12-team field includes Central Michigan, Cleveland State, Chicago State, Dayton, Detroit Mercy, the host Eagles, Green Bay, Northern Kentucky, Oakland, Ohio and Purdue Fort Wayne. The tournament is named after Shirley Spork, the first female introduced into EMU's E-Club Hall of fame in 1981. Spork won the Women's District Match Player Championship three times in four years and in 1947 won the first-ever National Collegiate Championship held for women's athletics. She went on to found the LPGA's Teaching and Club Division and conducted golf clinics in foreign countries. Spork is also a member of the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame and the Professional Golfers' Association of America Hall of Fame.

This is the third straight season the Broncos have competed in the tournament. WMU finished in fifth last season and in third on 2017. WMU golf alum Julia Champion won the tournament in 2017 for her third career collegiate win.

Last season it was Fiona Wang who paced the Broncos, tying for fifth overall after shooting a 36-hole total of 149 (+5). Her total ended up being her career low for a 36-hole tournament. Wang was also WMU's top finisher in its season-opening tournament at the Ball State Cardinal Classic, taking 11th.

Western Michigan is back in action at the Mid-American Conference Preview hosted by Akron at Silver Lake Country Club in Silver Lake, Ohio, the home of the 2020 MAC Championships.
