KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan women's soccer team opens up Mid-American Conference play hosting Kent State on Friday at 4 p.m. and Ohio on Sunday at 1 p.m. Friday's game will be streamed live on www.wmubroncos.com/watch.
HEALTH ALERT
State and local health officials are advising preventative measures against mosquito bites as a precaution against the very serious but rare mosquito-borne virus Eastern Equine Encephalitis. Western Michigan is advising individuals to limit outdoor activities between 7 p.m.-7 a.m. Bronco student-athletes and coaching staffs have continually been updated on EEE, its impact and the best preventative measures. Fans are also encouraged to follow the Kalamazoo County Health and Community Services Department's guidelines.
LAST WEEK
The Broncos wrapped up non-conference play with a 4-1 loss to Loyola Chicago at home last Friday. The Ramblers scored three goals in the span of eight minutes in the first half to put WMU in an early 3-0 hole. LUC added another goal early in the second period on a penalty kick before Bailey Korhorn added a penalty kick of her own to cut the lead to 4-1. The goal was Korhorn's second on the season.
THE SERIES
Western Michigan trails in both series, with a 7-12-2 record all-time against Kent State and a 7-11-4 record against Ohio. Seven of WMU's 21 games against KSU have been settled in overtime, while six of the 22 against OU have needed extra time. Last season the Broncos downed the Golden Flashes, 4-3, on the road to snap a six-game losing streak against them and their first win since 2011. WMU fell at OU, 2-0, last season.
90'S DAY
Sunday's game will be 90's themed. Fans are encouraged to wear their favorite pair of acid washed jeans, colorful windbreaker or any other 90's fashion they may own and cheer on the Broncos. WMU will be raffling off two Razor scooters, no purchase necessary, and the best-dressed 90's fan will go home with a Razor scooter and a $20 gift card to Applebee's.
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN FLASHES
Kent State (2-4-1) wrapped up non-conference play last weekend with a 4-2 win at Youngstown State. Entering MAC play the Golden Flashes are 1-3 on the road so far this season.
KSU's attack is led by junior forward Cameron Shedenhelm and her six points on two goals and two assists. Sophomore defender Karly Hellstrom is tied with Shedenhelm for the team lead in goals scored. Maddie Holmes, Grace WOlber and Tianna Harris have also each tallied goals on the season. The Golden Flashes have only given up eight goals in their seven games this season and boast two shutouts. Sophomore goalkeeper Faith O'Neill has played every minute in net, making 28 saves.
SCOUTING THE BOBCATS
Ohio (5-3-0) is the highest scoring team in the conference heading into MAC play, averaging 2.13 goals per game in eight games OU started off the season with five straight wins but have since lost three straight to Robert Morris, at Ohio State and at Georgetown. The Bobcats wrapped non-conference play with a 7-0 loss at the Hoyas last Friday.
OU has had a scoring-by-committee approach to power its attack this season with 11 different players tallying at least a goal. Senior midfielder Alivia Milesky leads the team with eight points on a team-best three goals and two assists. Freshman defender Heather is tied with Milesky for the team lead with two assists and also has two goals. Freshmen Olivia Darrow and Maddie Young also each have two goals on the season, while seven other Bobcats have scored once. Junior Sydney Malham has started seven of the eight games this season with a 3-3-0 record and has made 25 saves.
ON THE HORIZON
WMU heads out on the road for the first time in MAC play next week, heading to state rivals Central Michigan on Friday at 7 p.m. and Eastern Michigan on Sunday at 1 p.m.
