YORKTOWN, Ind. – The Western Michigan golf team sits in fifth place at the Ball State Cardinal Classic at The Players Club golf course, with two individuals in the top 10, after the first two rounds of play on Monday.
The host Cardinals lead the tournament at 599 (+23), followed by IUPUI in second place at 602 (+26). Eastern Michigan and Bradley are tied in third place at 612 (+36). The Broncos got off to a rough start, shooting a 315 to open the first round but responded with a 299 in the second round, the third-best team round of the day, to sit at 614 (+54) through 36 holes.
"Today was a great comeback for us from round one to round two," said head coach Elise Swartout-Mosher. "I think everyone felt much mor nervous and anxious than they thought they would at the start of the day. Once we settled in, we played good golf. Tomorrow's key is for us to get off to a solid start."
Sophomore Fiona Wang sits tied for seventh with a 150 (+6), and sits just two strokes out of the third place heading into tomorrow's final round. Wang made seven birdies in her 36 holes, the third-most in the field. She opened play with a 78 in the first round but rebounded to shoot even par 72 in the second round to move up the leaderboard.
Senior Jasmine Chee sits just behind her tied for ninth place after shooting a 151 (+7). Chee opened with a 77 before shooting a 74 in the second round. Freshman Alissa Fish shot an 81 in her first collegiate round before recovering well and shooting a 75 in the second to sit tied for 26th at 156 (+12). Junior Camryn Lucia sits just one stroke behind her, while sophomore Imogen Courtney shot a 162 (84, 78) in her Bronco debut.
The final round begins on Tuesday at 9 a.m.
