KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Western Michigan men's tennis team opened its 2019 fall competition schedule at the River Forest Invite, which was hosted by Northern Illinois University. WMU and NIU players were joined by student-athletes from Green Bay, St. Louis, Valparaiso, Illinois State, Youngstown State and Illinois Chicago. Play consisted of six flights of singles and three flights of doubles with no team scores being kept.
The Broncos demonstrated the strongest performance of the eight participating schools, winning five of the nine flights at the River Forest Tennis Club.
At #1 singles, sophomore
Peter Kuszynski went 3-0 to take home the individual championship. In the final match, the reigning MAC Newcomer of the Year defeated Vasilis Vardakis from Youngstown State in three sets.
Freshman
Rodrigo Crespo won the #5 singles title, taking down Pelle Strandberg of UIC in three sets as well. Kuszynski and Crespo teamed up in #1 doubles, where they placed fourth overall.
Senior
Kennosuke Nouchi made it three singles titles for Broncos, prevailing over Illinois State's Jorge Bartra. Nouchi made it to the #2 singles final without dropping a set in his first two matches.
Kuszynski, Crespo and Nouchi all won their respective finals in come from behind fashion after dropping the first set.
Nouchi, a native of Kashima, Japan, also won a doubles championship with junior
Zac Faveri at the #3 draw. At #3 singles, Faveri went 1-2 to finish in fourth place out of eight student-athletes.
Sophomore
Jack Randall and freshman
Arjun Honnappa were victorious in the #2 doubles bracket, winning all three of their contests without dropping a single set. In singles play, both Randall and Honnappa finished second in their respective draws.
Western Michigan will resume its fall competition schedule next weekend at the Notre Dame Bobby Bayliss Invite in South Bend, Ind.
