KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan women's soccer team hosts the University of Notre Dame on Thursday at 5 p.m. at the WMU Soccer Complex.
Admission is free and the game will also be streamed for free at www.wmubroncos.com/watch.
LAST TIME OUT
The Broncos went on the road to open the regular season at the University of Iowa, falling to the Hawkeyes 2-0. WMU limited most of UI's chances to well outside of the box but Iowa netted an early goal in the 11th minute to take a 1-0 lead. The Hawkeyes added a late penalty kick goal in the 83rd minute to finish off the game. Sophomore goalie Hannah Sargent made five saves on the night for the Broncos.
THE MATCHUP
Despite being just 90 minutes away, the is only the fourth time that Western Michigan and Notre Dame have played. The Fighting Irish lead the all-time series 2-0-1. WMU's losses came in 2016, 3-0 at UND, and 1-0 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament back in 2013. Western Michigan's best result, a 2-2 tie, came at the WMU Soccer Complex in 2015 on the back of two goals by alum Emma Kahn.
SCOUTING THE FIGHTING IRISH
Notre Dame enters Thursday's contest winning its opening two regular season games, both at home. UND opened the season with a 1-0 win over Saint Louis and then a 4-0 victory over Northwestern.
Eva Hurm and Luisa Delgado are tied for the team lead in goal scoring, each with two. Hurm has an assist for an early five points on the season. Brooke Littman and Mattie Interian have split time between the sticks for UND. Littman started and made four saves in the win over the Billikens, while Interian made four saves in the blanking of the Wildcats.
ON THE HORIZON
Western Michigan heads on the road for its next three games. WMU travels to Cincinnati on Sunday and then heads out to Colorado Springs, Colo., to take on Colorado College and the Air Force Academy. The Broncos take on the Tigers on Friday, Sept. 6 at 9 p.m. and then the Falcons on Sunday, Sept. 8 at 2 p.m.
