Baseball Adds Matt Hansen as Volunteer Assistant Coach

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Western Michigan baseball head coach Billy Gernon announced on Friday that Matt Hansen will be joining the Bronco staff as a volunteer assistant coach for the upcoming season.

Hansen spent last season as a volunteer assistant coach at the University of Toledo where he played from 2015-2018. Hansen replaces Adam Goodwin who recently took a position at Kellogg Community College.

"We are excited to add Matt to our staff. He has established and proven himself as a tireless and dedicated worker as well as a fierce competitor who has a clear passion for the game," said Gernon. "Matt is a tremendous addition to our staff and we appreciate Adam Goodwin's service to our program and wish him nothing but the best in his new coaching opportunity."

During his playing career at Toledo, Hansen was a three-time captain and letter winner for the Rockets. Hansen played in 204 games, tallying 182 hits and 107 runs. The Erie, Pa., native also ranks fourth in Toledo history with 87 career walks.

Hansen is a 2014 graduate of McDowell High School where he was Salutatorian his senior year as well as a three-year letter winner in both baseball and basketball. Hansen earned First-Team All-State and All-Region honors during his senior campaign.

"During Matt's interview I told him that the greatest compliment I could pay him was that I couldn't stand competing against him at Toledo. He carried himself with tremendous confidence and demonstrated tremendous leadership qualities." said Gernon.

Hansen graduated from Toledo with degrees in both Finance and Supply Chain Management in 2018. His father, Tom Hansen played both basketball and baseball at Notre Dame and was captain of the baseball team in 1974 before signing with the Detroit Tigers.
