GLOUCESTER, Mass. – Three student-athletes from the 2018-19 Western Michigan Hockey Team have been named American Hockey Coaches Association All-American Scholars for their achievements on the ice and in the classroom.
To garner All-American Scholar distinction, a student-athlete must have earned at least a 3.6 grade-point average during each semester or trimester of the 2018-19 academic year and participated in at least 40 percent of their team's games this past season. A small number of waivers to the 40 percent participation requirement were granted due to injury or for back-up goaltenders.
Bennett earns the prestigious honors for the second time in his career. The St. Louis, Mo., native appeared in 34 games during his junior season and contributed six assists from the blue line. Bennett posted a 3.98 GPA in the first semester of the season and followed it up with a 4.0 in the second semester. Bennett holds a cumulative GPA of 3.98 in biology.
Kucharek earns the honors in his first year with the Broncos. The Royal Oak, Mich., native played in 37 games as a freshman and posted eight assists as a defenseman. Kucharek posted a 4.0 GPA during the first semester and a 3.87 in the second, while majoring in exercise science.
Gorsuch wrapped up his WMU career with a personal-best season. The senior goalie played in a career-high 32 games, posting a record of 19-11-1 and helping the Broncos finish in third place in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference and securing home ice in the NCHC Playoffs. Gorsuch posted 3.69 GPA in the first semester and a 3.63 in the second before graduating with a degree in sports management in April.
