Jannik Opitz Named Second Team Academic All-American

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Western Michigan men's tennis' Jannik Opitz has been named Google Cloud CoSIDA Second Team Academic All-American, as voted upon by the College Sports Information Directors of American.

Opitz holds a 4.0 GPA in finance and earned CoSIDA First Team Academic All-District honors, along with Academic All-Mid-American Conference honors. The Hildesheim, Germany native was a First Team All-MAC selection and named the MAC Player of the Year after helping lead WMU to both a MAC regular season and tournament championship. Opitz posted a 13-4 overall record at No. 1 singles, including 6-1 in the MAC. He was the ninth Bronco to earn the MAC Player of the Year award.

Opitz is the third Bronco to receive Academic All-American honors this season, joining Anthony Bowie from the men's soccer team and Seth Dugan from the men's basketball team. He is only the second men's tennis player to receive Academic All-American honors, joining Jeff Brink. Brink earned the honors in 1999 and 2000.
