Baseball Boasts Record 13 Academic All-MAC Selections

CLEVELAND –  The Mid-American Conference announced its Academic All-MAC team on Tuesday with a program-record 13 Western Michigan baseball student-athletes earning the academic honor.

Since 2015 the Western Michigan baseball team has had 25 student-athletes earn Academic All-MAC with three players (Jesse Forestell, Andrew Stone, Jack Szott) doing so in each of the three seasons eligible.

It's the fifth year in a row that WMU has placed at least five on the Academic All-MAC team. Western Michigan led the conference with 13 selections, followed by Kent State with 11.

The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport.

Blake Dunn • Sophomore • 3.58 • Sports Management
Led the Broncos in batting average (.374), runs scored (43), hits (71), triples (2), slugging percentage (.521), on-base percentage (.467) and stolen bases (30) en route to First Team All-MAC honors.

Cooper Marshall • Senior • 3.72 • Sports Management
Marshall played in 46 games, starting 34 in the outfield. Marshall ranked third on the team with a .314 batting average and scored 24 runs on 38 hits with three doubles, three home runs and 22 RBIs.

Logan Hudson • Redshirt Sophomore • 3.64 • Accounting
Hudson is a two-time Academic All-MAC selection and ranked fifth on the team with a .289 batting average. Hudson this season registered two home runs and 26 RBIs to go along with a .405 slugging percentage.

Andrew Stone • Redshirt Senior • 3.67 • Sports Management
Stone becomes one of just three players in program history to earn Academic All-MAC honors three years in a row. During his senior campaign, Stone recorded a .282 batting average with 49 hits, 34 runs scored and 17 RBIs.

Justin McIntyre • Sophomore • 3.53 • Criminal Justice
Played in 41 games, starting 30 primarily at second base in 2019. McIntyre registered a .274 batting average along with a .398 slugging percentage with 24 runs scored and 13 RBIs. The Portage, Mich., native had five multi-hit games and three multi-RBI games.

Sean O'Keefe • Sophomore • 3.66 • Business
O'Keefe played in 41 games, starting 34 at first base and hit .248 with a .355 slugging percentage and a .333 on-base percentage. In 121 at-bats registered 17 runs scored, 30 hits, five doubles, one triple, two home runs and 24 RBIs.

Ethan Hajdukovic • Junior • 3.82 • Accounting
Hajdukovic earned Academic All-MAC honors for the second year in a row, playing in 38 games and hitting .239 for the Broncos. The Inverness, Ill., native captured two multi-hit games and two multi-RBI games to go along with nine runs scored, three home runs and nine RBIs.

Jesse Forestell • Senior • 3.73 • Marketing
One of three players in program history to be named three-time Academic All-MAC. Forestell led the Broncos with six home runs during his senior campaign and threw out 21 runners trying to steal, the second most in the MAC.

Connor Charping • Sophomore • 3.78 • University Curriculum
In 41 at-bats in 2019, Charping registered three RBIs and seven hits while posting single-game career-highs in hits (2), runs scored (2) and RBIs (1). The sophomore catcher played in 24 games, starting five with three at catcher and two as the designated hitter.

Will Mullen • Redshirt Junior • 3.41 • Sales & Business Marketing
Mullen made 28 appearances on the mound in 2019, the third most in single-season in school history. Mullen led the team with four saves and posted a 3-4 overall record with a 4.50 ERA in 50.0 innings of work.

Chris Modrzynski • Senior • 3.35 • Speech Pathology & Audiology
A two-time Academic All-MAC selection, Modrzynski during his senior campaign made 16 appearances on the mound with 14 starts. The senior LHP earned a 4-3 record with a 5.65 ERA and ranked second on the team with 79 strikeouts.

Jack Szott • Redshirt Junior • 3.94 • Accounting
Szott is one of three players in school history to be named Academic All-MAC three times. The Naperville, Ill., native in 2019 made 15 appearances with 14 starts on the mound for the Brown & Gold. Szott in 56.0 innings of work allowed 72 hits with 50 strikeouts.

Tyler Thorington • Junior • 3.79 • Finance
Thorington earned Academic All-MAC honors for the second year in a row after pitching 34.0 innings, allowing 22 earned runs on 33 hits with 28 strikeouts. During his junior campaign, Thorington pitched a career-high six innings, allowing no runs on four hits with two strikeouts at Miami (5/12).
