KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Western Michigan men's tennis landed two CoSIDA Google Cloud Academic First Team Academic All-District selections in the at-large category with senior Lenhard Haupt and junior Jannik Opitz earning the honors.
The 2018-19 Google Cloud Academic All-District® Men's At-Large Team, selected by CoSIDA, recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances in the athletic realm and in the classroom. The Google Cloud Academic All-America® program separately recognizes outstanding student-athletes in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA.
Haupt boasts a 3.97 GPA in finance and was a First Team All-Mid-American Conference selection, helping WMU win both the regular season and MAC Tournament titles. Haupt posted an 11-10 overall record at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 singles, including 4-1 in the MAC. He also played at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles with a 16-7 overall record, 5-1 in the MAC.
Opitz, who co-captained the team with Haupt, sports a 4.0 GPA in finance. He named the MAC's top player and earned his second career All-MAC First Team honor after posting a 13-4 overall record at No. 1 singles, including 6-1 in the MAC. A native of Hildesheim, Germany, Opitz also posted a 6-1 overall record at No. 1 doubles and a 12-3 overall record at No. 2 doubles in helping the Broncos to the program's 13th MAC Championship Title. Opitz became the ninth Bronco to earn the Player of the Year award and WMU is represented for a second year in a row, as Maik Steiner was the 2018 top player.
Both move on to be eligible for Academic All-American.
