Softball Completes CMU Series Wednesday

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan softball team is to conclude its series with in-state rival Central Michigan University Wednesday, April 10, hosting the Chippewas at 2 p.m. from Ebert Field. 

The Broncos and Chippewas previously split a Mid-American Conference doubleheader in Mount Pleasant, Mich. April 2, with WMU winning 12-5 game one prior to CMU prevailing 11-3 in game two.

LAST TIME OUT
Western Michigan was swept in its home-opening weekend by Kent State University, falling by scores of three-run deficits in each game. Mackenzie Swinehart led WMU in the series with four hits and three runs scored, while Logan Carter and Kaylen Glenfield tallied two RBI each. Carter hit a pair of solo homers. 

ABOUT THE BRONCOS
After opening conference play 3-1, WMU most recently dropped three consecutive to fall to 3-4 in the MAC. The Broncos rank near the middle of the pack in the conference with a .270 batting average as a team, led by sophomore Sydney Stefanick. Stefanick ranks second in the MAC with a .750 slugging percentage, ranking among the top five with a .402 batting average, 28 RBI, and eight home runs.

SERIES HISTORY
Wednesday's game will mark the 127th all-time meetings between Western Michigan and Central Michigan, with the Chippewas owning a 78-48 series advantage. 

SCOUTING CENTRAL MICHIGAN
After taking game two against the Broncos last Tuesday, CMU followed with a series sweep over Ohio in Mount Pleasant, improving to 7-3-1 in the MAC. Defensively, the Chippewas are tied with Kent State atop of the MAC with a .966 fielding percentage.

STRIKEOUT CANCER
Western Michigan hosts Strikeout Cancer Day on Saturday, April 13 during the doubleheader versus Ball State. The Broncos will be collecting donations with all proceeds going to Bronson Children's Hospital. WMU will also be wearing special jerseys to honor those who have battled cancer. BRONCOS ADD PAIR TO RECRUITING CLASS
Head coach Kathy Leitke recently announced the addition of two more to the 2020 recruiting class, as Maddie Duell and Autumn Godwin have signed National Letters of Intent (NLI) to continue their academic and athletic careers at Western Michigan. Duell comes to WMU from nearby Mattawan, Mich., where she has been a four-year letter winner at Mattawan High School. Duell has led the Wildcats to a pair of district championships including a Southwestern Michigan Athletic Conference conference title last season. Fremont, Ind., native Autumn Godwin is right handed pitcher that led Fremont High School to a sectional and regional championship last season as the Eagles turned in a 26-6 record.
