Broncos Headline MAC Men's Tennis Postseason Awards

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Mid-American Conference announced the 2019 Men's Tennis All-MAC First and Second Teams as well as specialty awards Wednesday, April 24, with Western Michigan Men's Tennis earning the Player, Newcomer, and Coach of the Year honors. 

Jannik Opitz was named the Player of the Year, Peter Kuszynski was selected as the Newcomer of the Year, and Dave Morin earned the Coach of the Year accolade. 
 
Junior co-captain Jannik Opitz was named the MAC's top player and earned his second career All-MAC First Team honor after posting a 13-4 overall record at No. 1 singles, including 6-1 in the MAC. A native of Hildesheim, Germany, Opitz also posted a 6-1 overall record at No. 1 doubles and a 12-3 overall record at No. 2 doubles in helping the Broncos to the program's 13th MAC Championship Title. Opitz becomes the ninth Bronco to earn the Player of the Year award and WMU is represented for a second year in a row, as Maik Steiner was the 2018 top player. 
 
Freshman Peter Kuszynski was honored as MAC Newcomer of the Year and earned All-MAC Second Team recognition. A native of Markham, Ontario, Kuszynski in his first season of collegiate competition played at No. 2-6 singles with a 15-8 overall record, 6-1 in the MAC. He also competed at both No. 1, No. 2, and No. 3 doubles with a 13-6 overall record, 3-1 in the MAC. Kuszynski is the seventh Bronco to be selected as the MAC's top rookie, following in the footsteps of teammate Kennosuke Nouchi in 2017. 

Dave Morin received Coach of the Year honors for the second consecutive season while collecting his 11th MAC Coach of the Year award at WMU. Morin and the Broncos won the MAC Men's Tennis Tournament Championship for the tenth time in the last 14 years and the fifth time in the last eight years.

Joining Opitz on the All-MAC First Team is fellow co-captain and German native Lenhard Haupt, who posted an 11-10 overall record at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 singles, including 4-1 in the MAC. He also played at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles with a 16-7 overall record, 5-1 in the MAC. Haupt received Second Team laurels last season. 
 
Western Michigan will represent the MAC in the NCAA Tournament. The Broncos ended the regular season with a 16-8 overall record, winning seven of their last eight matches. With a pair in the MAC Tournament increased Western Michigan's record improved to 18-8 overall and sport a current five-match winning streak.
