KALAMAZOO, Mich.- Senior
Rachael Underwood and sophomore
Morgan Spence etched themselves into the Bronco record book Tuesday night, as each recorded a top-10 all-around score in school history. As a team, Western Michigan was narrowly edged by visiting UIC, 194.650 to 194.325.
Following this past weekend's performance at Kent State, Underwood was named the Mid-American Conference Gymnast of the Week earlier in the day on Tuesday, prior to the evening's competition against UIC. Underwood continued to impress, placing first in three out of the four events against the Flames.
Underwood turned in top scores on vault (9.850) and balance beam (9.850) and tied for first with Spence on the floor exercise (9.875). Also adding a 9.750 on the uneven bars, her all-around total came to 39.325, which tied her own 2017 score for second best in school history. Underwood also holds the school all-around record with a 39.350 (set vs. Ball State last season), giving her the top three all-around performances all-time at WMU.
Spence's 9.875 on floor was a career high, as was her all-around total of 39.175, which tied for eighth in school history. Spence won the uneven bars with a 9.850 and scored a 9.725 on both the vault and beam.
Sophomore
Stacie Harrison had two top-five finishes, placing fourth on vault (9.775) and floor (9.775). Senior
Taylor Buis also tied for fourth on vault. Sophomore
Alexis Olivier took third on bars with a 9.800. It was Olivier's third-straight meet scoring a 9.800 or better in the event.
As a team, Western Michigan was solid on vault (48.800), bars (48.900) and the floor (48.900), but had inconsistency on balance beam (47.725), which allowed UIC to slip by for the win.
