BLUFFTON, S.C. – The Western Michigan golf team successfully defended its title at the Low Country Invitational, also taking the individual title after Jasmine Chee finished in first place after a playoff, at the Crescent Pointe Golf Club.
The Broncos had the team title wrapped up after shooting a 311 on the day for a combined 36-hole total of 619 (+51). However, Chee shot a 75 to finished with a 149 (+7) and was tied with Hannah Stephenson of Lander University. The two played the 18th hole for the playoff, a par four measuring out at 352 yards. Chee put her second shot to the collar of the green, while Stephenson had hit her second shot into the trees. From there the Hong Kong native putted from the collar and put it about four feet from the hole. Chee then finished it off for a par and the win.
"Our hard work all year has paid off these last two weeks," said head coach Elise Swartout-Mosher. "I am so proud of this group of players. They continue to commit themselves to their process day in and day out. The exciting part is we have more left in us. I'm excited to see what else they have in store for the rest of the season.
Chee finished her first collegiate win with five birdies and 21 pars over the two rounds.
Senior Claire Hernandez continued her strong start to the second-half of the season, finishing in third overall, shooting another 75 to finish at 150 (+8). Hernandez finished tied for third in pars with 23 and also sank four birdies. Sophomore Cameryn Lucia finished tied for 11th after shooting a second-round total of 79 for a 156 (+14). Freshman Brooke Gibbons finished with a 164 (+22), while classmate Fiona Wang finished right behind her with a 166 (+24).
Western Michigan is back in action on March 30 and 31 at the Bradley Spring Invitational.
