KALAMAZOO – With just three more weeks left until the 2019 Indoor Mid-American Conference Championships at Kent State, the Western Michigan track and field team splits up this weekend, heading to the Iowa State Classic and the Grand Valley State Big Meet this weekend.
The group of Diamond Mitchell, Erica Sheahan, Madison Meredith, Abena Atuobi, Alex Bryant and Taneidra Cain all head to ISU, while the rest of the team heads up to GVSU. Mitchell and Sheahan kick off the action in Aimes on Friday in the long jump at 1 p.m., while Meredith will compete in the 200-meter dash at 3 p.m. On Saturday Atuobi starts off the day in the shot put, while Meredith and Mitchell will compete in the preliminaries of the 60-meter dash. Cain, Meredith, Bryant and Mitchell will combine to compete in the 4x400-meter relay.
"We had some really good performances last weekend," said head coach Kelly Lycan. "Even over at Hillsdale I thought we got some things accomplished. Coach (Pat) Tracy's two weight throwers in Taylor Eaton and Aniya Davis both really did a good job.
Both Davis and Eaton will compete in the same events at GVSU.
"Sarah Anderson breaking the school record in the mile last weekend certainly proved she is ready to really be at the top of her game toward the end of the season," Lycan added. "Juliane Sormain, with her PR in the mile, that show's she's ready to run too."
Both runners will be competing in the 800-meter run, along with Chloe McEachern and Haley Ritsema at GVSU on Friday. The Broncos will also have a full slate of action at Grand Valley State on Saturday.
WMU spits up again next weekend, heading back to the University of Notre Dame for the Alex Wilson Invitational and to Ball State University for the annual BSU Quad Meet.
