LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla. – The Western Michigan golf team fell in the quarterfinals of the Mid-American Match Play Challenge to Northern Illinois, 4-1, after defeating Morehead State, 5-0, at Lakewood Ranch Golf & Country Club on Monday.
WMU started off the tournament with an impressive showing over MSU, with all five Broncos defeating their opponents. Freshman Brooke Gibbons won 5&3, Cameryn Lucia 3&2, Fiona Wang 6&4, Jasmine Chee 5&4 and Claire Hernandez 3&2.
Western Michigan advanced to the quarterfinals against second-seeded NIU but Chee was WMU's lone victor, going 4&3.
"It was nice to get off to a fast start in our morning matches," said head coach Elise Swartout-Mosher. "We played well and made lots of birdies. This afternoon fatigue definitely got the better of us. Overall, there are lots of positives to take into tomorrow and through the spring season.
Western Michigan drops to the consolation bracket to take on conference rival Central Michigan.
