Golf Sits in First at Chippewa Invitational

BIRMINGHAM, Mich. – The Western Michigan golf team sits in first place after the opening round on Monday of the Chippewa Invitational at Birmingham Country Club.

The Broncos combined to shoot a 300 (+12), sitting six shots ahead of Grand Valley State, seven of Northwood, eight of Bradley and 13 of Toledo in the field of 13 teams.

Individually, senior Jasmine Chee sits in third place, just two shots off the lead after shooting a 74 (+2). Freshman Alissa Fish is in a three-way tie for fourth along with sophomore Brooke Gibbons after both shooting a 75 (+3). Sophomores Fiona Wang and Imogen Courtney sit just one shot behind them in a seven-way tie for seventh place after shooting 76's (+4).

"All five showed such great patience today," said head coach Elise Swartout-Mosher. "They should be so proud of their hard work paying off. Tomorrow is another day to continue to control what we can. We will go out and have fun!"

As a team, the Broncos combined for 11 birdies to lead the field and tied with Bradley for the most pars at 55. WMU gained its ground on the par fives, shooting a combined -2 on the day. Western Michigan also had a tournament best +11 on par fours on the day. Individually, Courtney was tied for second in pars with 13, while Wang and Gibbons were tied for third in the field in birdies with three.

The final round begins on Tuesday at 10 a.m.
