KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Western Michigan golf team heads down to Birmingham, Mich., and the Birmingham Country Club to close out the fall season at the Chippewa Invitational on Monday and Tuesday.
WMU joins the host Chippewas, Bradley, Chicago State, Detroit Mercy, Eastern Michigan, Ferris State, Grand Valley State, Mount St. Mary's, Niagara, Northwood, Oakland, Purdue Fort Wayne, Stonehill and Toledo in the 15-team field. The teams will play 36 holes on Monday, beginning at 10 a.m. and then wrap up the tournament with 18 more on Tuesday. The course measures out to 5,994 yards and is a par 72. Live scoring is available through golfstat.com.
"This team has worked hard this fall season," said head coach Elise Swartout-Mosher. "They have come to practice every day ready to get better. We have another great opportunity to play well for two more tournament rounds."
The hard work has paid off for freshman Alissa Fish. Fish has emerged as WMU's No. 2 finisher in each of the past two tournaments the Broncos have played. The Clarklake, Mich., native has averaged 78.0 per round she has played this year, second-best behind senior Jasmine Chee's 75.56. Fish's best tournament was the Shirley Spork EMU Invitational, where she led the field in pars with 39.
"As a freshman, I couldn't have asked for more out of Alissa this fall," said Swartout-Mosher. "She loves to compete and that has shown in her scores. Her Bronco career has a very bright future."
After the Chippewa Invitational the Broncos will be out of action until they head down to Lakewood, Fla., for the annual Mid-American Conference Match Play Challenge hosted by Bowling Green on Feb. 3-4.
