KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The 14th-ranked Western Michigan hockey team finished off the series sweep of No. 20 Miami after a 3-2 victory at Lawson Ice Arena on Saturday night.
Sophomore forward Josh Passolt netted two goals, while Trevor Gorsuch made 26 saves as the Broncos (13-6-1, 6-3-1-1 NCHC) extended their unbeaten streak to 10 games (9-0-1). Mattias Samuelsson netted the game-winning goal in the third period, while Austin Rueschhoff had two assists on the night. WMU outshot MU 33-28 and limited the RedHawks to just five shots on goal in the third period. The Bronco penalty kill continued its strong play, holding Miami scoreless on three chances.
Tied 2-2 early in the third period the Broncos took the lead for the third time of the night at 5:25. Samuelsson had the puck in the left circle and ripped a shot through traffic that found the back of the net for his fourth goal of the season. Luke Bafia and Rueschhoff both tallied assists on the goal.
Miami once again pulled its goalie in the final minutes but the Bronco defense and Gorsuch stood strong.
WMU got on the board very early thanks to Passolt's 13th of the season at just 2:12 in the first period. Rueschhoff won a draw to Cole Gallant and the freshman forward shifted the puck back to Passolt, who rifled one off into the top-right corner of the net. The assist was Gallant's fifth of the season and Rueschhoff's ninth.
Miami tied it up on a goal by Derek Daschke at 14:17 in the first period. In transition, Ben Lown fired a shot on net with Gorsuch making the initial save. Daschke swooped in and punched in the rebound for his fourth goal of the season.
Passolt gave WMU a 2-1 lead at 13:09 in the second period for his 14th goal of the season. Kale Bennett fed the puck to Colt Conrad up the left side of the ice. The senior forward took it into the Miami zone on a 2-on-1 rush and dished it to Passolt in the slot for the goal. The assist was Conrad's team-high 14th of the season, while Bennett recorded his career-high fourth of the season.
Jonathan Gruden punched in his own rebound minutes later at 18:34 to send the game to the third period tied up at 2-2.
Western Michigan heads back out on the road to No. 1 St. Cloud State on Friday and Saturday. Friday's puck drop is set for 8:07 p.m., while Saturday's will be at 7:07 p.m. Both games can be seen live on NCHC.tv and heard live on the Bronco Radio network.
