ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The 10th-ranked Western Michigan hockey team saw its 10-game unbeaten streak come to an end after falling at No. 2 St. Cloud State, 3-0, on Friday night.
The Huskies outshot the Broncos, 36-22, limiting their chances on the night. Trevor Gorsuch made 34 saves for WMU (13-7-1, 6-4-1-1 NCHC).
After a scoreless first period Nick Poehling finished off an odd-man rush to give SCSU a 1-0 lead at 1:09 in the second period. Nick finished off a pass from his brother Ryan after a turnover in the neutral zone.
St. Cloud State pushed the lead to 2-0 on a goal by Micah Miller at 9:20 in the second period. SCSU had another rush and Easton Brodzinksi saw his initial attempt stopped by Gorsuch but the Broncos didn't clear the rebound and Miller swooped in to put it into the net.
WMU's comeback attempt in the third period was stifled by taking two penalties and the team was limited to eight shots.
The Broncos pulled Gorsuch for the extra-attacker but Jack Poehling scored the empty-net goal with 53 seconds left.
The two teams battle again on Saturday night at 7:07 p.m. The game can be seen on NCHC.tv, Fox Sports North Plus and Fox Sports Detroit Plus. The Bronco Radio Network will have live coverage beginning at 6:30.
