IOWA CITY, Iowa – For the second straight time this season and the fifth time of her career, senior Claire Hernandez finished in the top 10, tying for 10th overall at the Diane Thomason Invitational hosted by the University of Iowa at Finkbine Golf Course on Sunday afternoon.
Hernandez jumped of four spots on the leaderboard in the final day after shooting a weekend-best 76. She finished with a 54-hole total of 223 (+17). Hernandez led the team with 31 pars during the tournament, and tied with teammates Fiona Wang and Brooke Gibbons with four birdies.
Western Michigan finished in sixth place with a combined score of 952 (+88) after finishing the day with a 318.
"This wasn't our best tournament from a results perspective, but it was great to see Claire finish in the top 10 again," said head coach Elise Swartout-Mosher. "We never really got it going. That being said, we learned a lot and know where we need to work. This team has so much talent and we are looking forward to our next event."
In their second tournaments of their young collegiate careers, Wang and Gibbons both made improvement sand finished tied for 28th after shooting 240 (+24). Junior Jasmine Chee finished just a stroke behind at 241 (+25). Sophomore Cameryn Lucia finished off her weekend with a 248 (+32).
Western Michigan heads to familiar territory on Monday, Oct. 8 to participate in the annual Shirley Spork Invitational hosted by Eastern Michigan.
