YORKTOWN, Ind. – The Western Michigan golf team sits in seventh place after shooting a combined 610 (+34) after the first two rounds of the Ball State Cardinal Classic at The Players Club on Monday.

Senior Claire Hernandez led the team and sits in a three-way tie for fourth place after shooting an opening round of 72 and a second round of 73 for a 145 (+1). Hernandez finished even par in all par threes and par fours on the day, recording 25 pars and five birdies.

"Overall we played very solid today," said head coach Elise Swartout-Mosher. "I know we have more in us; we just need to clean up some small mistakes tomorrow. It was great to see Claire play so well today. She was consistent with her ball striking and made a few puts when she needed to. For the first two rounds of the year, it was a good day for us."

Sophomore Megan Watkins was WMU's second finisher on the day, sitting tied for 33rd with a total of 155 (+11). Junior Jasmine Chee sits just behind her at 156 (+12), while Cameryn Lucia shot a 157 (+13). Freshman Fiona Wang also made her collegiate debut on the day.

The final round begins on Tuesday at 9 a.m.
