Men's Soccer Hosts UMBC In Search of Three-Straight Wins

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Western Michigan men's soccer team (3-4) is set to host the University of Maryland, Baltimore County on Saturday, Sept. 12 with hopes of claiming a third consecutive victory. Kickoff is scheduled for a noon start at WMU Soccer Complex.

Last time out
The Broncos recorded a season-high with three goals scored during a 3-1 victory at the University of Cincinnati on Wednesday, Sept. 12. Kosti Moni picked up a career-high two goals scored, while Ben Thornton added the other WMU goal. Cameron Sipple tallied two assists and goalkeeper Lukas Von Lienen earned the win in net.

Series History
Saturday's match marks just the second all-time matchup between the Western Michigan and UMBC men's soccer programs. WMU faced UMBC for the first time in program history last season. The then-ranked No. 12 Broncos defeated the Retrievers 2-0 in Baltimore, Md. on Sept. 23, 2017.

Scouting UMBC
The Retrievers, selected to finish fifth in the America East Preseason Poll, finished with a 7-6-5 overall record in 2017 and return 20 letterwinners from last year's squad, including seven starters. UMBC most recently notched its third shutout victory of the season last Saturday, Sept. 8, winning 2-0 at Navy to improve its record to 4-1 overall. Sophomore forward Cesare Marconi leads the Retriever attack with nine points off three goals and three assists. Sophomore goalkeeper Ciaran O'Loughlin has started four of five games in net, having allowed four goals with 13 saves.

Bronco Notables
  • The Broncos' season-opening 2-0 win over Loyola Chicago Aug. 24 marked the fourth-straight season-opening victory for Western Michigan.
  • The shutout loss at DePaul Aug. 27 marked the first time Western Michigan was held scoreless since a 1-0 loss against No. 6 Michigan State Oct. 4, 2017. It was also the first loss against the Blue Demons in the all-time series.
  • Donovan Michael broke the WMU three-game scoring drought at Michigan Sept. 7, his first collegiate goal. He then added his first collegiate assist against Drake.
  • Making his fourth consecutive start of the season in net at Cincinnati, freshman goalkeeper Lukas Von Lienen made three saves to claim the win, improving his record to 2-1.
  • Cameron Sipple registered his second career two-assist performance at Cincinnati. He also had two assists during a Bronco 6-0 win over IUPUI in 2016.
  • Kosti Moni scored his team-leading third and fourth goals of the season at Cincinnati, a career-best two-goal game. The last time a Bronco had a two-goal game was Brandon Bye, twice in 2017.
