KALAMAZOO, Mich.- Former Western Michigan linebacker Robert Spillane has been signed as a free agent to the Tennessee Titans' 90-man roster.
Â
Spillane took part in the team's three-day mini-camp at Saint Thomas Sports Park on a tryout basis and was one of five players that earned a roster spot following the team's rookie mini-camp over the weekend.
Â
Spillane joins former Western Michigan teammate Corey Davis in Tennessee. Davis was an All-American wide receiver at WMU and was taken No. 5 overall by the Titans in the 2017 NFL Draft.
Â
Spillane finished his college career with 312 tackles, 32.5 tackles-for-loss, 10 sacks, four interceptions, five pass breakups, two fumble recoveries and three forced fumbles. He was a Second Team All Mid-American Conference selection his junior and senior seasons.
In 2016 Spillane made book-end plays in Western Michigan's MAC championship season that saw the Broncos go on to the Goodyear Cotton Bowl and a final No. 15 ranking. Spillane forced a goal line fumble with two minutes left in a 22-21 win at Northwestern in the season opener. Spillane then intercepted a pass with a minute remaining in the MAC Championship game against Ohio to seal the Broncos' first conference title since 1988.
Â
As a senior in 2017, Spillane recorded 88 tackles, 11 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. He had four games with 10 or more tackles. He returned a 35-yard interception for a pick six against Kent State for only TD of career.
Â
Spillane is one of seven Western Michigan players to get drafted, sign a free agent contract or get an NFL mini-camp invitation in the past two weeks. Offensive lineman Chukwuma Okorafor was the first player from the MAC and the state of Michigan taken in this year's draft, being selected in the third round, 92nd overall by the Pittsburgh Steelers. Cornerback / kickoff specialist Darius Phillips was selected in the fifth round by the Cincinnati Bengals. Linebacker Asantay Brown (Philadelphia), tight end Donnie Ernsberger (Tampa Bay) and running back Jarvion Franklin (Pittsburgh) all have signed free agent contracts and defensive end Andre Turner earned a rookie mini-camp tryout with the Atlanta Falcons.
