WMU Softball Knocks Off #19 BYU in Season-Opener

Box Score TEMPE, Ariz.- Junior pitcher Jordan Kurth struck out a career-high 10 batters, leading Western Michigan softball to a 2-1 season-opening win over No. 19 ranked BYU Thursday at the Kajikawa Classic. Freshman Samantha Coffel delivered the game-winning hit with a two-out, two-run single in the top of the fifth.

Kurth surrendered just four hits in the complete-game effort. BYU's lone run was unearned in the bottom of the sixth. Her 10 strikeouts were the most by a Bronco since Allyson Kus fanned 14 batters in 8.2 innings at Ball State on April 29, 2016.

Kurth recorded a strikeout in every inning and punched out two in the first, second and seventh innings. She recorded the third out with a K in the first four innings, as well as the seventh.

The Broncos had six hits in the game. Freshman Mackenzie Swinehart led off WMU's season beating out an infield slap single in the top of the first. She finished the game 2-for-4 at the plate while Coffel went 2-for-3.

Coffel stepped up to bat with the bases loaded and two outs in the fifth and drove a hard hit up the middle past BYU's diving shortstop. Two runners came across for the Broncos, accounting for WMU's two runs of the evening. Playing in her first collegiate game, Coffel started in left field for the Brown & Gold.

Senior Aspen Williams had the defensive play of the game in the top of the second as she made a catch tumbling over the fence in center field to rob BYU's Madison Merrell of a home run.

Last season BYU made an appearance in the NCAA Regionals with a 46-13 overall and 14-1 record in the West Coast Conference. The 2018 NFCA preseason poll has BYU ranked No. 19 in the nation and the Cougars were picked as the favorite to win the WCC this season.

Western Michigan (1-0) continues play at the Kajikawa Classic tomorrow. The Broncos face No. 12 ranked Tennessee at 1:45 p.m. ET and then take on San Diego State at 7:15 p.m. ET.
