Box Score CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.- The Western Michigan softball team split a pair of games on Friday to open play at the Chattanooga Frost Classic. The Broncos fell in game one 11-3 to Eastern Illinois and bounced back with a 1-0 afternoon win over Western Illinois.
Senior outfielder
Aspen Williams drove in all three Bronco runs in game one. She hit a two-run home run in the fourth and collected an RBI on a bases loaded groundball in the fifth. Her home run was her team-leading fourth of the year. Freshman
Samantha Coffel and sophomore
Mackenzie Swinehart each scored a run. The Broncos had four hits in the game. Coffel was 1-for-1 with a double and a pair of walks.
Eastern Illinois hit home runs in each of the first three innings to jump out to a 5-0 lead. The Panthers added three more runs in the fourth, two runs in the fifth and a final run in the bottom of the sixth of off a solo home run. Junior pitcher
Jordan Kurth took the loss, throwing two innings in the start. Senior
Anissa Sanchez finished out the game.
Freshman
Sydney Stefanick hurled a complete-game shutout in game two for her first collegiate win. She allowed just four hits and struck out one.
Western Michigan broke the scoreless pitcher's duel in the bottom of the sixth, scoring the game's only run. Senior
Brooke Wyman Brooke led off the Bronco at bat with a double to center field and moved to third on a groundout to the pitcher. She came across the plate on a wild pitch. Stefanick sat the Leathernecks down in order in the top of the seventh to complete the win.
The Broncos (3-5) return to the Frost Classic playing a doubleheader on Saturday, facing UT Martin and Alabama State. Western Michigan wraps up the weekend on Sunday against Southeast Missouri State.
