KALAMAZOO, Mich. – On Saturday Western Michigan volleyball head coach
Colleen Munson announced that four student-athletes have inked National Letters of Intent to join the Broncos next fall.
The 2019 recruiting class consists of outside hitter / middle hitter / right side
Alyssa Torres (South Bend, Ind.), outside hitter Margaret King (Cincinnati, Ohio), setter
Rose Duffy (Fishers, Ind.) and middle blocker
Abbey Herrmann (Clinton Township, Mich.).
"We are excited to welcome these four to the Bronco volleyball family and can't wait to get this group in the gym next fall," said Munson. "All four of our 2019 commits are solid and experienced players that will impact our program right away both on and off the court."
Rose Duffy • Setter • Fishers, Ind. • Fishers High School
A four-year varsity letter winner at Fishers High School, Duffy totaled 3,443 career assists along with 796 digs, 116 service aces and 173 kills. During her sophomore campaign, Duffy eclipsed the 1,000-assist mark with 1,050 and had over 700 assists every year of her prep career.
Duffy is a two-time All-Conference selection and during her four years had an overall record of 95-28, winning at least 22 games each year. Fishers HS has finished second in the Hoosier Crossroads Conference each of the past three seasons and was sectional champions in 2018. For her performance during her senior campaign, Duffy was named IHSVCA First Team All-State and was an Under Armour All-American honorable mention.
Duffy joins a long list of college athletes in her family as her father Rob, mother Beth and her two brothers Charlie and Tyler played at the collegiate level. Duffy plans to pursue a degree in Elementary Education at WMU.
Duffy on choosing WMU: "I love the campus and the education program that WMU provides. The coaches and players were also a big draw for me because they not only teach you volleyball skills but life lessons as well."
Maggie King • Outside Hitter • Cincinnati, Ohio • Mason High School
King was a four-year varsity letter winner at Mason High School where guided the team to three straight league championships and an overall record of 80-18 in her prep career. King is a four-time All-Conference honoree, earning First Team honors the past three seasons.
During her senior campaign, King eclipsed the 1,000-kill mark and was named Greater Miami Conference Player of the Year and District Player of the Year. In her final season King earned First Team All-Ohio honors and was an Under Armour High School Senior All-American honorable mention.
King is the daughter of Douglas and Sharon King and has three older siblings, Bryan, Ally and Matt. Her youngest Brother Matt is currently a sophomore on the Ohio Dominican University men's basketball team. King plans to major in occupational therapy at WMU.
King on choosing WMU: "I felt as if it was a perfect fit for me athletically and academically. The volleyball coaching staff and team made me feel like family the moment I stepped on campus."
Alyssa Torres • Outside Hitter / MH / RS • South Bend, Ind. • Penn High School
At Penn High School, Torres was a four-year varsity letter winner playing in 329 sets and totaling 755 kills, 228 blocks and 64 service aces. Torres helped Penn HS to three straight conference championships and a semi-state runner-up in 2018. During her prep career, Penn HS had an overall record of 116-30.
In her senior campaign, Torres registered 273 kills with 113 blocks and 22 service aces. Torres has earned First Team Northern Indiana All-Conference honors the past two seasons and was named First Team IHSVCA 4A All-State in 2018.
Torres adds to the list of college athletes in her family as her father Rick, mother Brenda, brother Anthony and Austin and cousin Matthew each played collegiate athletics. Her uncle Mark played on the Western Michigan men's basketball team from 1982-86 while her brother Anthony is currently a freshman tight end on the Bronco football team.
Torres on choosing WMU: "I felt an immediate connecting with the coaching staff. I also felt that the team values at Western Michigan was incomparable to anything else."
Abbey Herrmann • Middle Blocker • Sterling Heights, Mich. • Stevenson High School
Herrmann heads to Kalamazoo after being a four-year varsity letter winner at Stevenson High School. During her prep career Stevenson HS had a staggering overall record of 158-42-3, claiming four straight District titles and a regional championship in 2019. In her sophomore season, Herrmann guided Stevenson to the conference championship with a record of 42-7-2.
For her career Herrmann recorded 870 kills with a .277 hitting percentage along with 472 blocks and 93 service aces. Herrmann was named MAC First-Team All-Conference in 2018 after earning all-conference honorable mention honors the two seasons prior. Hermann was also a three-time all-county selection and a two-time All-Region honoree. In 2019, Herrmann was named Third Team All-State.
Herrmann is the daughter of Thomas and Janet Herrmann and has two older siblings.
Herrmann on choosing WMU: "I felt really comfortable with the coaches and student-athletes that I met while on campus. I also chose WMU because of the many majors that are available for me to choose from."
